IRELAND

4 Weeks, Early July-Early August

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
The University of Alabama is pleased to announce the 5th annual
summer term to Ireland for summer 2008. Students will spend July 9 - July 20 at the National University of Ireland (NUI) in Galway, Ireland. July 21 - July 27 at Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland. July 28 - August 5 at historic Trinity College, in Dublin, Ireland, founded in 1592.

Courses will be offered in global studies and literature and will be
supplemented by Ireland's rich cultural offerings in museums, galleries, historic sites, and natural landscapes.

Ireland is famous for its lush, green countryside, its fascinating history, and such well-known authors as Samuel Beckett, Seamus Heaney, James Joyce, George Bernard Shaw, and William Butler Yeats. Numerous Americans have an ancestral heritage in Ireland, and Irish folk music continues to grow in popularity in the U.S. Dublin itself is home to the renowned Abbey Theatre, the National Gallery, the National Museum, and Dublin Castle. Due largely to the growth of computer and hightech industries there, Ireland has enjoyed a wave of prosperity in the last fifteen years. Now one of the liveliest, most stylish, and vibrant cities in the European Union, with an estimated half of its residents under thirty years of age, Dublin offers opportunities for both historical and contemporary pursuits. Galway, a picturesque university town, has a lively arts and entertainment scene and is the cultural center of the Irish West. Belfast is the Capital of Northern Ireland and, like Dublin,
it offers a range of historical and contemporary attractions.

The program is open to undergraduate and graduate students, by arrangement, who are registered at any two-year or four-year institution in the United States, and to other qualified persons.

COURSE OFFERINGS
After successful completion of the program, students will have
earned a total of 6 hours of credit at The University of Alabama
for the following courses:

CIP 200: Introduction to Global Studies, 3 hours: Mr. Brendan O’Farrell
The University of Alabama Introduction to Global Studies course
will examine intercultural communication from a variety of theoretical and practical standpoints. The course will place
particular focus on Irish culture and history as well as Northern Ireland's long legacy of peace and conflict. In addition to these themes and subjects, CIP 200 aims to meet the following
objectives:

• Encourage students to participate in UA's Global Certificate
Program
• Provide students with vocabulary and resources appropriate for
global study and competence
• Encourage students to approach all UA courses with an
international perspective
• Highlight the availability of existing UA courses which, when
taken in appropriate combinations, will lead to greater global
awareness

EN 311: Special Topics: 3 hours: Dr. John Burke
The topic will be, "Being Irish, With and Without Ireland." Dr.
Burke and students will be looking at the texts of famous Irish
writers, texts such as Gulliver's Travels, Dracula, The Importance
of Being Earnest, and Endgame as well as stories by J. S. LeFanu
and James Joyce and poems by Nobel-prize winners W. B. Yeats
and Seamus Heaney. While doing so, they will try to determine
what influence "being Irish" had on such famous literary achievements.
