Resolution Thanking Norm Baldwin and Other Members of the Faculty Leadership Review Committee for Their Work in the Development and Use of Instrument for Obtaining Faculty Feedback on the Leadership of Deans and Department Heads/Chairs

Whereas, the faculty of The University of Alabama have long desired and needed a method for evaluation of Deans and Department Heads/Chairs separate from the five-year process mandated by the Faculty Handbook; and

Whereas, efforts by the Faculty Senate to collaborate with the Council of Deans in the development of an evaluation method were unsuccessful; and

Whereas, Norm Baldwin, a professor of Political Science and former President of the Faculty Senate, persuaded the Senate to establish a Faculty Leadership Review Committee to develop and implement such an evaluative program, led that Committee in careful and thoughtful development of such a program, and championed its cause before the faculty, the Faculty Senate, and the administration of the University, often in the face of criticism and other adversity; and

Whereas, the Faculty Feedback Survey has now been successfully used to evaluate the University's Department Heads, and will soon be used similarly to evaluate the University's Deans; and

Whereas, the faculty and the Faculty Senate have found the survey and its results to be important, useful, and helpful;

Therefore, be it resolved by the Faculty Senate that praise and thanks be given to Norm Baldwin for his efforts, as well as to the other members of the Faculty Leadership Review Committee -- Martin Bakker, Pat Bauch, Judy Berry-Stock, Scott Bridges, Catherine Davies, and Garry Warren -- and to their graduate assistant Justice Kali, for their work.
