SAFE ZONE RESOLUTION

Whereas, the University of Alabama Faculty Senate has affirmed its support of diversity and of a welcoming campus environment that respects the dignity of all people; and

Whereas, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (lgbt) students are at risk psychologically and physically as members of a stigmatized minority on campus; and

Whereas, faculty have the obligation to practice nondiscrimination and inclusion in the classroom and in the curriculum; and

Whereas, Safe Zone is a grassroots, student-led program (uasafezone@yahoo.com) established at UA in spring of 2002 for the purpose of providing education and resources to faculty, staff, and administrators in order to create a visible network of volunteer allies for lgbt and questioning students seeking information and assistance regarding sexual orientation; and

Whereas, nearly 50 faculty, staff, and administrators have already voluntarily undergone Safe Zone training and have identified themselves as allies; and

Whereas, for the Safe Zone program to succeed in helping to make the UA campus a welcoming environment for all students, regardless of sexual orientation, there should be a high level of faculty participation,

Be it therefore resolved that the Faculty Senate of The University of Alabama commends this student led program for its courage and hard work; and

Be it also resolved that the Faculty Senate encouarges interested faculty to be designated as Safe Zone allies by participating in a Safe Zone education program.
