RN Options - Scholarship and Financial Aid

Several types of financial assistance are available to RN Mobility students. Students may apply both for merit scholarships and for need-based financial aid.

Merit Scholarships

Merit scholarships are awarded through several sources. The Office of Nursing Student Services administers some scholarships. Applications are available at http://scholarships.ua.edu/current/.

RN Mobility students are also encouraged to apply for scholarship support through the College of Continuing Studies (CCS). CCS administers many awards that are available only to online students. Additional information is available at http://continuingstudies.ua.edu/scholarships.html.

Students typically apply for scholarships approximately one year prior to beginning online study through the RN Mobility Tracks. Although deadlines may change from year to year, a December 1 deadline is customary.

Need-Based Financial Aid

Need-based financial aid is awarded through the UA Office of Student Financial Aid. This office administers federal and state programs that include both loan and grant assistance.

Students who wish to apply for need-based financial aid should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (available at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov) and send their results to The University of Alabama (institution code #001051). This application should be completed as soon after January 1 as is possible.

Federal Government Assistance

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) offers repayment of educational loans to employed nurses: All NELRP participants must enter into a contract agreeing to work full time in an approved eligible health facility. For two years of service, the NELRP will pay 60 percent of the participant’s total qualifying loan balance. A participant who agrees to serve two years may be eligible to amend the NELRP contract and work a third year at an eligible health facility, for which the NELRP will pay an additional 25 percent of the qualifying loan balance.
