Required PDA Hardware and SoftwarePalm TX

Students entering Upper Division are required to purchase a handheld PDA and required PDA software. Students promoted to upper division prior to this requirement may choose to purchase and PDA and required nursing software. Directions for purchase and operation are listed below.

The Capstone College of Nursing has selected Skyscape.com as the vendor for the Palm TX PDA and required software pre-installed onto a 1 GB SD memory card. For student convenience, a portal has been created on Skyscape’s Website at http://www.skyscape.com/bama for student ordering.

For NUR 309/NUR 319, the required software* is:

  • Davis’s Drug Guide for Nurses
  • Diseases and Disorders: A Nursing Therapeutics Manual
  • Nurse’s Pocket Guide: Diagnoses, Prioritized Interventions, and Rationales
  • Mosby’s Diagnostic and laboratory Text Reference
  • Taber’s Cyclopedic Medical dictionary, 20th Ed.
  • ICD-9-CM Coding Reference
  • Archimedes Medical calculator
  • MedStream

For NUR 309/NUR 319, the required hardware is:

  • Palm TX ***
  • 1GB SD memory card with all above software preinstalled by Skyscape.

*   Skyscape software provides students with periodic updates for 1 year. 

**  MedStream cannot be downloaded to SD cards, but Skyscape will provide a link on the skyscape.com/bama Web site.

*** If a student already owns a PDA, it must meet the minimum requirements below:

  • PDA must have at least 128 MB of internal memory.
  • Purchase required software listed above.

Once hardware and software are received, students will have to connect to the Internet by a computer in order to register and sync the software onto the PDA before the software can be used.

Required Tutorials in Preparation for Clinical Courses

Students are responsible for knowing how to use your PDA and being familiar with the required software. Students who took the nursing informatics course before Fall 07 are expected to do the following tutorials.
