5. Division of Student Affairs Graduate Assistantships

The Student Affairs division of The University of Alabama provides assistantship opportunities to some fifty graduate students each year. These positions are available in the University’s Career Center, Office of the Dean of Students, Office of Community Service and Volunteerism, Office of Ferguson Center Union Services, Residential Life, Russell Student Health Center, Student Recreation Center, and Women’s Resource Center. Responsibilities range from assessing student needs to developing and implementing programs and services.

Unless otherwise noted, Student Affairs assistantships are 10–20 hours per week for the nine-month academic year (some positions may also be available during the summer session, based on the graduate assistant’s qualifications). Assistantships may also provide a partial tuition subsidy, if resources are available.

Career Development Graduate Assistant. Provides additional support for four Career Counselors within The Career Center. Serves as an assistant for research, publicity, programming and counseling activities. Assists with activities sponsored and coordinated by the Career Development area of The Career Center.

Employer Relations and Recruiting Graduate Assistant. Provides additional support for the Coordinator of Employer Relations and Recruiting and Event Coordinator with The Career Center. Serves as an assistant for research, marketing, training programs and other outreach activities. Acts as a liaison with employers who come to campus for recruiting activities during peak recruiting weeks in spring and fall semesters.

5.2 Office of Dean of Students

Honors Week Graduate Student.  Coordinates the activities related in the annual Honors Week observance.

Student Government Graduate Assistant.  Supports the efforts of staff members advising the Student Government Association and related entities; provides assistance to the Financial Affairs Committee (FAC).

Programming Graduate Assistant.  Serves as an integral part of the University Programs team working with student programming, concerts and lectures.  Provides assistance with University Programs events.

Greek Life Graduate Assistant.  Provides administrative support to three governing councils, 19 sororities and 26 fraternities.

 Leadership Graduate Assistant.  Provides support for the development of leadership programs; gains experience advising student organizations, developing leadership initiatives, teaching a leadership course and developing and facilitating leadership workshops.

“Kick-off on the Quad” Assistant.  Provides direction and logistical support to the pre-football home game festival known as Kick-off on the Quad.  This individual will also assist with other programs during late fall and spring.

Parent Orientation Graduate Assistant.  Plans the annual Parent Orientation program and assist with Parents Association.

Dean of Students Graduate Assistant.  Provides general administrative support to the Dean of Students; requires broad knowledge and understanding of the role and scope of Student Affairs.

5.3 Office of Community Service and Volunteerism

Graduate Assistant.  Provides assistance in developing community service programs, volunteer training and educational reflection opportunities; serves as a facilitator and research assistant for service-learning seminars; supports advisement of campus volunteer clearinghouse.

Office of Ferguson Center Union Services Graduate Assistant.  Assumes responsibility for marketing the student union, maintaining the Website, coordinating special events and assisting the Events Coordinator with scheduling.

Programming Graduate Assistant. Maintains a program database for student staff; presents programs for staff and residents; creates and administers programming surveys to residents; coordinates program advertisements.

Hall Director.  Assumes responsibility for overall administration of the building; supervises student staff; coordinates educational and social programming; advises Hall Council; provides counseling and referral services to students.

Marketing Assistant.   Supports Assistant Director of Marketing and Conferences in effectively marketing a residential community in a University setting.
