ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION
To qualify for the Rural Health Scholars Program, an applicant must be a resident of rural Alabama who will be a high school senior in the next school term with a ‘B’ average and meets admissions criteria for the University. Participants will be selected who the interests, motivation and personal qualities have most suited for becoming future physicians and other health professionals practicing in a rural community. For these reasons, applicants are asked for a statement of interest, information concerning academic experiences and achievements, and at least two recommendations. One recommendation has to be from someone familiar with your academic record.
CALENDAR
The program begins the first Sunday, June and ends five weeks later. An orientation session for parents and participants will be held on the Sunday afternoon the program starts. Classes are scheduled daily with Chemistry lecture and Creative Writing meeting each day and Chemistry lab meeting three times a week. Seminars and field trips are scheduled throughout the program.
ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES
Participants will enroll in special RHSP sections of two University of Alabama academic courses: Creative Writing (EN 200) and Introductory to Chemistry with laboratory (CH 104). Students will take these two courses at no risk, and if he/she earns an A, B, C he/she will receive college credit if not he/she will not be penalized. Meaning any grade lower than a “C” will not be recorded on the student’s academic record.
Participants will attend special seminars related to health care, study sessions, and take part in field trips to a major medical center and local rural health care facilities.
RESIDENTIAL OPPORTUNTIES
Participants will live in a University residential hall and eat in University dining halls. Males and females will be housed separately in a residence hall with gender specific counselors assigned to each group. For the student's safety and security, a sign-in/sign-out system will be used. Curfew and quiet hours for study time are established and enforced.
LEISURE/SOCIAL OPPORTUNITIES
Daily recreation opportunities are available as well as regularly scheduled group social activities. All group activities and social events are required. Students will be allowed to use the student recreation center and other recreational facilities around campus.
COST
Tuition, room, meal ticket and books expenses are provided by financial support from the Alabama Family Practice Rural Health Board, the University of Alabama and friends of Rural Alabama. Participants will be responsible for the application fee, transportation to and from the program, and personal expenses.
This is not a summer camp-it is an intensive and rigorous academic program. You will be expected to attend all classes, seminars, and field trip. Also, you will be expected to keep up with a rigorous schedule and large amounts of homework. If you are expecting an easy five weeks, you will be disappointed. If you come prepared to work hard and use your own initiative to take advantage of opportunities for learning and growing, your summer with the RHSP will be a rewarding experience.
