MRHPP
FAQ

What is the Minority Rural Health Scholars Program?

The Minority Rural Health Scholars Program (MRHPP) was initiated in 2001 to increase the number of minority students from rural Alabama who qualify for admission to medical school through the Rural Medical Scholars Program.  MRHPP is a five-week summer program for recent high school graduates from rural Alabama, who plan to attend college in the next academic year.  Scholars will live on campus, take classes and tutorials to enhance knowledge and test taking skills so that they can achieve competitive scores on the Medical College admission test (MCAT).

Where do participants stay?

Participants will reside in University housing for the five weeks. Females and males will be housed in the building but on separate floors.   Depending on the building the program will be housed will determine if there will be community showers and bathrooms or not.

What is the cost of the program?

Tuition, room, meal tickets, and books will be provided at no cost to the participants.  The only cost to those selected will be a $35 admission application fee to The University of Alabama, a fee for a parking decal (if you bring a car or truck) and spending money.  The program is made possible by State of Alabama Legislature through the Family Practice Rural Health Board, the University of Alabama and Project EXPORT.

Can I go home on the weekend?

Participants are not required to stay over the weekend but can if they wish.  However, anytime you leave campus you must let a counselor know your destination.  There will be a sign in/out boards located in a central location for this purpose.

Who are the counselors?

ounselors are former participants of the program and currently enrolled Pre-Med students at The University of Alabama.  Counselors are there to help conduct tutorial sessions, plan activities, be a mentor and provide guidance.

How long will I be in class each day?

Participants are in class each morning from 8 am until 12 pm.  On Monday, Wednesday and Friday you will be in Chemistry lab from 2 pm until 5 pm. Tuesday and Thursday afternoons you will be attending seminars and/or shadowing a physician.

What can we do for fun?

Participants can use the recreational facilities on campus which includes a state of the art weight room, in- door swimming pool, a lazy river with slide and basketball court.  Also, the counselor will plan activities.  This past summer students participated in a talent show, a scavenger hunt, had an ice cream social, a game and a movie night.
