The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine offers a wide range of
clinical opportunities. Caseload diversity, including experiences with
adult and adolescent individual psychotherapy, marital therapy, family therapy,
clients with a behavioral medicine focus and exposure to EMDR treatment, is a
major strength of this placement. Because we are located in the Medical
School, there are opportunities to collaborate with physicians and medical students
as well as developing a close working relationship with the psychiatrists on
faculty, Drs. Thaddeus Ulzen and Lloyda
Williamson.
The Family Therapy Clinic is probably the most exciting part of the placement
at Capstone. Dr. Nancy Rubin supervises
this component of the program with Dr. Debra Nelson - Gardell from the School
of Social Work. Families come to the hour and a half clinic for initial
evaluation and treatment. The team consists of the two faculty supervisors,
graduate clinical psychology students and third year medical students. Those
team members behind the one-way mirror actively contribute to the therapy they
are witnessing on the other side of the mirror. Mini-lectures on the basics
of family therapy and the use of genograms are an important part of the Family
Therapy Clinic experience.
Because we are located in the medical school, there are endless opportunities
for exposure to the medical side of health care. Or course, these are “extras,” available
to any placement student, taken advantage of by few. There are Grand Rounds each
week and well as regular presentations by our third year Family Medicine Residents
which combine their training in medicine and psychiatry/ behavioral medicine. One
could spend a few half days during the year in the medical suites watching faculty
physicians or one could attend hospital rounds on a few occasions. It depends
on your interest and energy.
Placement Curriculum Requirements:
- Caseload of an average of 4 clients/patients
- One hour group supervision is the usual, depending on student
