Introduction
College students make up one of the largest identifiable populations of the
uninsured and underinsured. Too many students risk their health, education, and
possible future on the assumption that they will not need health insurance. We
all get sick or get hurt, and the Student Health Center is equipped to take care
of most routine health needs of students. However, we do not provide emergency
or specialized health care. Also, during hours or holiday breaks when school
is not in session, students cannot receive care at SHC.
Being covered means you won't be deprived of specialized medical treatment
at a time when you may need it most, but can't afford it. If you're like most
students, the LAST thing you need is a devastating bill from a doctor or hospital.
The cost would probably take a toll on your school or future plans. Maybe it
could even cause you to drop out and never finish your education.
The University of Alabama, through Viva Health, offers a low-cost competitive
health insurance plan for students, scholars, and dependents. The following is an
