Welcome to the Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency!

With thirty-six residents as the sole physicians-in-training at the 500-bed DCH Regional Medical Center, Tuscaloosa has one of the largest most successful family practice programs in the United States. Our 347 graduates over three decades constitute one of the largest residency alumni groups in the Southeast.
We are preparing family physicians for twenty first century medical practice with our computerized electronic medical record-keeping system and a spacious new family practice center.
Together with its sister institution, the Univeristy of Alabama School of Medicine it combines all the advantages of an unopposed residency program with a community-based feel with the academic excellence afforded by the academic departments. As a resident, you truly have the best of both worlds.
An intense, vigorous program ensures that you receive the training you need to successfully practice in any setting. A strong emergency department means that residents are called only for the best teaching cases. Interns have most afternoons off after call.
As we are the only residency program at our hospital, residents receive undivided attention from physicians in all specialties, who serve as adjunct faculty and are dedicated to training excellent family physicians. Our program is enriched by the presence of sixty third-year and fourth-year medical students, as well as students from other medical schools who have chosen Tuscaloosa for a senior elective experience in family medicine.
Tuscaloosa is a wonderful place to live. It has the feel of a small town, yet it is also a lively cultural and sporting mecca. In 2002, the University of Alabama was one of only a handful of universities with teams in the NCAA championships in football, baseball, basketball, and soccer. In addition, the women's gymnastics team won the NCAA championship. Opportunities abound for residents to work with the teams. Seasonal events like Dickens Downtown, The Kentuck Arts Festival, and The Moundville Native American Festival are fun and enlightening. Apart from fall football games, there is never a traffic jam. Nationally known musicians come to play regularly at our well regarded music school. The Drama Department presents plays year-round. Homecoming is fun for the whole family. You can enjoy nature by canoeing on the nearby Little Cahaba River or by camping and fishing at Lake Lurleen State Park. You can even ski in winter at nearby Cloudmont Resort. A well-kept secret is that one of the finest private collections of art is America is open for viewing daily at Gulf States Corporation.
Our program strongly supports residents and their families. While on call, enjoy dinner with your family; they can even spend the night in our family call rooms. Your spouse or significant other will enjoy our active spouse’s group. Our small on-call teams truly serve as your extended family.
