Obstetrics
The required three month rotation in basic obstetrics and gynecology provides
an excellent clinical experience, thanks in part to an active inpatient obstetrical
service. For residents interested in practicing obstetrics, further training
is available at CCHS.
- An advanced obstetrics elective curriculum is supervised by
full-time faculty in family medicine and obstetrics and gynecology.
- A one-year fellowship in obstetrics and gynecology is available.
- Prenatal services at the University
Medical Center include:
- Fetal heart monitoring
- Ultrasound
- Delivery options at DCH
Regional Medical Center include:
- Traditional labor/delivery suites
- Labor/delivery/recovery rooms with one-on-one nursing
Sports Medicine
The Family Medicine Residency maintains a strong working relationship with The
University of Alabama Athletic Department and its team physicians and trainers. Sports
medicine has always been included in the curriculum, because sports-related injuries
frequently are seen by family physicians.
- A productive, one-month rotation with the University's Athletic
Department is recommended.
- Additional elective rotations in athletic medicine are available.
- A primary-care sports medicine fellowship, under development,
will soon be available.
Rural Medicine
A primary goal of the College of Community Health Sciences is to train physicians
in the practice of primary care medicine in rural areas of Alabama and the Southeast.
At present, the resident works with practicing physicians in one of three adjacent
counties involved in the Rural Alabama Health Alliance.
- A required one-month rotation in rural medicine includes:
- Office practice
- Rural hospital care
- Emergency medicine
- Occupational medicine
- Community medicine
- A one-month supervised practice rotation with a practicing
family physician may be rural, suburban or urban.
- Several elective experiences are available for additional
experience in rural medicine.
