Family Medicine Residency

Instructions for Applicants

1.  The Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency only accepts the      Common Application Form (CAF) designed by the Association of American Medical Colleges for the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).  International medical graduates must write the ECFMG for the application.   We participate in the National Resident Matching Program and abide by its rules.  All applications received are reviewed by the Recruiting Committee.

2.  Foreign Medical graduates must have a valid ECFMG Certificate and J1 Visa, permanent residency or American Citizenship (We do not sponsor visas). 

3.  Must have passed USMLE Steps I and II, and Step II Clinical Skills, with a minimum score (182 for Step I & 184 for Step II Clinical Knowledge) prior to match.

4.  Applicants must have graduated from a medical school recognized by the World Health Organization within the past five years.  If greater than five years, applicant must have remained in clinical practice (preferably in the United States, but not required).

5.  A transcript, three letters of recommendation, and a Dean's letter must be submitted before an applicant can be considered for a residency position.  The three letters should comment on

the candidate's (a) medical knowledge, (b) clinical judgment and

(c) character. 

6.  After the application is received and reviewed, applicants chosen to be interviewed will be invited to schedule an interview using both email and US mail.

The nearest airport is Birmingham International Airport (airport code BHM). Ground transportation will not be provided.

8:30 – 9:00       Coffee with Dr. Waits, Program Director

9:00 – 9:30       Introduction to department with Dr. Alexander

9:30 – 11:00     Three interviews with residents or faculty

11:00 – 11:15    Break

11:15 – 12:00    Slide Show and Round Table Discussion

                        with residents... & Clinic Tour

12:00-1:30        Lunch and Hospital Tour
