Mrs. Garner was born In Waycross, Georgia. She graduated from Georgia Southern
College with a B.S. in Home Economics in 1970, and went on to get her M.S. in
Nutrition with a minor in public health in 1971 at the University of Tennessee
in Knoxville. She did a post graduate traineeship in nutrition and mental retardation
at the University of Tennessee Medical School in 1971.
She served as a nutritionist with the St. Louis Department of Community Health
and Medical Care from 1972-1974, then became an assistant professor, in 1977
coordinating the community nutrition undergraduate program in dietetics in the
School of Home Economics at the University of Alabama. She joined the College
of Community Health Sciences faculty in 1979 as a professor and director of nutrition
education and services.
She is the recipient of multiple honors, the most recent the Medallion award
in 1999 from the American Dietetic Association for her leadership, service, and
contributions to the profession. She has been active in many professional organizations
throughout her career, and currently serves as the UA Faculty Senate Representative
for the college. She Co-chairs the Legislative Agenda Committee whose mission
is to inform faculty and staff on funding and legislation critical to the University
of Alabama.
Her professional interests include diabetes, hypertension, coronary vascular
disease, and eating disorders . She is married to Dr. Robert Garner, professor
emeritus of chemistry. In her free time, she enjoys music, travel, tennis, and
most of all her 5 boys.
