Daniel M. Avery is an Associate Professor
and the Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. He is also
a Clinical Associate Professor of Family Medicine and of Psychiatry and Behavioral
Medicine. Dr. Avery specializes in High Risk Obstetrics and Medical and Surgical
Gynecology. He is also the OB/GYN Clerkship Director, Mentor for medical students
interested in OB/GYN and Pathology and Laboratory Medical Director. A native
of Tuscaloosa, Dr. Avery received a BS in Pathology from UAB in 1975 and an MD
from University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1982.
Following residency training
in Anatomical and Clinical Pathology at UAB in 1983, he completed an OB/GYN Residency
at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in 1987 and a postgraduate fellowship in
Psychiatry at UAB in 1997. Dr. Avery is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology,
Gynecologic Endoscopy, Forensic Medicine, Forensic Examination and Medical Review.
He has held numerous teaching positions, teaching medical students since 1979
and instructing residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology since 1983. He joined
the University of Alabama School of Medicine Faculty in Tuscaloosa in 2003.
Active
in many local, state, national and international organizations, he founded the
American Society of Forensic Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a special interest
group of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, currently serving
as the Executive Director. Dr. Avery is the Editor of the Medicolegal OB/GYN
Newsletter and has published more than four hundred papers, publications, chapters,
books and presentations on Obstetrics and Gynecology, Forensic Medicine and Addiction
Medicine. He is a founding member of the Board of Certification in Family Practice/Obstetrics
and currently serves as the OB/GYN CoChair.
