Members of the Lister Hill Society provide an invaluable
source of private support for the College and its students and faculty
by underwriting new programs and strengthening established ones, including the
major programs described here.
- On Rounds, a quarterly publication sent to all alumni, faculty,
members of LHS, members of the board of trustees, and other interested individuals
and institutions in Alabama, is funded by the Society. It is the society's
primary means of communication with alumni and friends, providing regular dates
on the outstanding achievements of current students, alumni, and faculty.
- Funding for the Larry Mayes Society honoring Larry Mayes, a medical student
who died while on an elective medical missionary rotation in Africa and received
his degree posthumously, is provided by the Society. Each quarterly dinner
features a senior student who presents a topic of personal research to fellow
students and faculty for discussion.
- Support for travel to a national medical meeting is made available to one
medial student and one resident each year.
- As resources permit, the Society provides financial support in the form of
short-term emergency loans to medical students.
- As resources permit, LHS provides start-up funds requested by student, residency,
or faculty for small research projects that have the potential to develop into
full-scale research studies.
